Specialists in Laboratory Animals
Internship – Residency – Diploma
The European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine was founded in 2000 by members of our sister society, the European Society of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (ESLAV). ECLAM was recognised as a European Veterinary Specialty College by the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS) in 2008.
ECLAM’s mission is to support the highest level of certification in Europe through training, evidence-based practice and promotion of the highest ethical standards.
Internship
Before embarking upon a period of specialised study, a 12-month internship covering a broad range of clinical experience within one of the major divisions of veterinary medicine is required. This is intended to gain practical experience beyond the veterinary medical qualification.
Residency
An approved residency is conducted under the supervision of an ECLAM Diplomate. This 3-6 year period provides advanced training in laboratory animal medicine, utilising a set of learning modules approved by the College. Those who successfully complete the certification examinations become EBVSⓇ
European Veterinary Specialists in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
Diplomates
Diplomates contribute to the education of interns and residents, practice evidence-based veterinary medicine, and advance the quality of laboratory animal care through scientific research and scholarly study. They must re-certify every 5 years to remain as Active members of ECLAM.
